Songs of the Civil Rights Movement

Student comments

I thought that “Song of the Sixties” was very interesting.  I learned a lot from it, like how mean the people were to blacks during the sixties.  I also learned about how the people protested and what the Hippies were like.

Cyd was a very good singer and also taught me a lot just through her songs.  She had lots of enthusiasm in all the songs.  My favorite song was “Blowin' in the Wind” by Bob Dylan.

It was indeed a pleasure to have you perform for the American Studies and U.S. History classes this year. Susan and I were especially delighted with your program on the Civil Rights Movement. This was the first time that you dealt exclusively with this historical event and the selection of music was impressive as well as very poignant. We were most impressed with the historical narrative that you used to accompany each song. Sharing personal histories and reflections of those individuals who were actually part of the movement effectively drew our students into the performance. You are to be commended for your excellent rapport with our students and for getting them actively involved in the performance. It isn't easy to get sixteen-year-olds to sing along!

Students responded emotionally to hearing your songs from the Civil Rights Movement making history very real. Your performance would certainly enhance any U.S. History or American Studies program.

Just a note to thank you for a most enjoyable "Songs of the Sixties" program. Not only do you have a marvelous singing voice, but we teachers were impressed by how well you handled the eighty-five fifth graders. Your explanation of the times, questioning techniques, and the fostering of audience participation all contributed to an extremely worth-while happening.. musically, socially, and historically. We hope other schools are fortunate enough to experience 'Cyd'.

I've also enclosed a few copies of student journal entries. As you can see, we all loved you.
