Creating Community: Appreciating Differences
A 3-5 Day Residency with Cyd Slotoroff for
Grades 4-9

An Example: Cyd's 3-Day Residency at Troup School

1.

Students began by discussing the principles of SOAR:
  • Safety
  • Organization
  • Attitude
  • Responsibility
an acronym that sums up what the New Haven Public School System wishes to reinforce in students.

2.

Picture
Cyd encouraged students to share their feelings and its meaning to them, and to turn those feelings into lyrics.

3.

Picture
Once they had a couple of verses on paper, they tweaked their lyrics into a song.

4.

Picture
They came up with a tune for their lyrics and began to rehearse.  They made some adjustments to make their intent fit the melody.

5.

Picture
Their teacher, Vincent Squeglia, was smitten by the enthusiasm of his students.  He helped by typing the
lyrics and the edits into his computer and printing them so they all could have their own copies to read from.

6.

After the composers took this picture, they began singing the song in the hallways at school.  By the time the December performance date arrived, all of the Troup 5th grade girls wanted to participate in the unveiling.  School administrators announced that this composition was the “New School Song,” and that this was the first time in over 30 years the school had ever done anything like this!

And here's the song!!
