Songs of the Civil Rights Movement
A School Program by Cyd Slotoroff for
Grades 4-12
Educational and entertaining, this program introduces students to the legendary civil rights music of the 1950’s and 60’s. Weaving in stories and historical notes, Cyd engages students in dialogue to help them understand the social, emotional and political context of the songs and of the movement. Students also learn the critical role of music in sustaining the civil rights movement.
Students learn about the rationale as well as the courage needed to engage in non-violent resistance. They discover that young people, full of idealism and willing to risk their safety, were often at the forefront in the struggle for freedom. Martin Luther King Jr. said "songs are the soul of the movement." In this program, students hear how these songs give voice to a community's sorrows, victories, and aspirations. They learn the critical role of music in building, nurturing, and sustaining this vitally important social justice movement.
